In February 2014, Wilsons Flooring Specialists were invited by Wirral Council to supply and fit a bespoke carpet for the marble staircase inside Wallasey Town Hall, a grade II listed building, which was constructed between 1914 and 1920.
The original carpeting had last been replaced more than forty years previously in 1968 and as such it was in a state of disrepair and was even held together with duct tape. However, as a building of special interest and a popular wedding venue, it was important that the new flooring reflected the beauty and heritage of the building.
What we did
Wilsons Flooring worked with the manufacturer, Calderdale Carpets, to design and select a carpet which was beautiful and luxurious but could also respond to the demands of the venue. The carpet chosen for Wallasey Town Hall is a commercial quality, heavy duty Axminister Carpet.
Our strong relationship with our suppliers enables us to negotiate excellent deals for our customers and ensure that our products meet our customers’ exact requirements. It was a complicated fitting because there was an extensive amount of borderwork and the carpets needed to be seamed and stitched.
Outcome
The Wallasey Town Hall marble staircase could have come straight out of the period drama, Downton Abbey. The gold and green carpet reflects the Grade II status of the building and makes a significant impact on visitors as soon as they set foot within the venue. Wallasey Town Hall sees at least 200 wedding ceremonies take place here every year, bringing in £20,000 for the local Council. The new carpet has improved the prospects for Wallasey Town Hall who are attracting more people interested in holding events. It took just three weeks to complete the job from start to finish.
